When I was first learning to Pole Dance (almost 4 Years Ago now), I was attending my local studio with a few friends, and I was severely hooked and feel in love with Pole Dancing straight away.
POLE BECAME MY LIFE!!! I lived it, breathed it, ducked out of work early to practice it and then the worst thing that could happen to a poler happened…… I broke my hand.
After the initial 8-week healing period I was told to ‘take it easy ’ (pffft as if), and ease back into it. Thinking it would be so easy to fall back into I soon learned that your muscles fade quickly when not in use.
I had become SO UNBELIEVEABLY UNFIT, I could no longer invert or do a basic beginner spin, I felt as weak as a new born child and to top it off I had this incredible fear of re-injuring myself (I was so scared to bear weight on my hand).
After I tried as hard as I could to complete the simplest moves, I ended up huddled inside my pole cave, broken and bruised, throwing a little tantum (and by little, I mean HUGE). I was crying as though the worst thing in the world had just happened to me, because that is exactly what it felt like.
Over the next few weeks I was itching to get back into the swing of things, but I was too embarrassed to attend a class (as I thought people would judge me, but let’s be honest the pole community is AMAZING, and I know that now). After feeling like a weak piece of crap I decided ‘stuff it’, I’m going to find some online resources and I'll teach myself!
I started at the very beginning and I re learnt everything I already knew. I found doing Instagram challenges a great way to motivate me, to try, learn and sometimes accomplish a brand-new move or goal that was once inaccessible (search #polechallenge for the monthly challenges available on IG). Whether it was pole or yoga I was incredibly motivated to push myself and learn as much as I could (whilst being as safe as possible, ALWAYS have a spotter and a crash mat available to you).
When once an Ayesha was impossible to me is now my go to move, so the impossible can become the possible! I am proof of that and you too can achieve those dream moves!
